SCminiGP and Youth Road Racing USA have wrapped up Round 5 of the 9 race series. This was the second event of 3 new tracks SCminiGP has added to the schedule and hosted at Buttonwillow International Raceway's Kart Track.
The weekend event was in the high 90's rounding out at 103 Sunday afternoon. The mornings started off nice with a warm track and plenty of practice time on Saturday. Attendance was strong as usual and several SMRRC riders from Nor Cal were in attendance.
Racing kicked off Saturday evening with round 2 of the 50H vs Thumpstar challenge... a battle won last month by the 50H Group. Just one race, all riders griding up based on a pee pick for poll, roating riders each position depending on class raced. The Thumpstar GP group had a good strategy in place and managed to pull off the win by just a few points.
Sundays events ran perfectly. The B-Cup saw a 5 bike pile up in the first lap with a 4 way battle for 2nd and 3rd place after the restart. Gabriel Hernandez scored his first win of the season and took the championship lead. The Semi-Pro Jr. was a show down between Jason Aguilar and Andrew Zabzydr. Andrew took the win last month, but Jason managed to get the gap and hold it this month. Semi-Pro Sr was a three way battle lap for lap against Steven Zabzydr, Dominic Contreras and Josiah Taulbee with the win going to Josiah after Steven and Dominic bumped in turn 4. In the 50L, rookie rider Daytona Anderson battled till the last lap against championship points leader Aaron Villasenior, Daytona lead most of the way and Aaron lost the front end at the end of the straight giving Daytona the win and the championship lead. The 50H was a show down between Dominic Contreras and Ben Morse with Dominic pulling away towards the end of the race. Ben was not scored as it was a bonus ride on his Thumpstar. Thumpstar GP was lead by Steven Zabzdyr until the last lap when Ben Morse took the lead and bagged the win. Formula GP was a three way show down between points leader Hunter Coffin, Daytona Anderson and Nor Cal local Brandon Kyee. Daytona managed the win while Brandon swooped a well earned second. The Pro GP was no contest for Justin Ducut but Ken Bigler managed to take second and hold his points lead.
The Califorina NSR Cup sponsored by ASV Inventions held round two of the 5 race championship and was a sweep race by Jason Aguilar on a borrowed NSR! The NSR championship will continue in Oct at the next Buttonwillow race although an unofficial round will be present at Adams on the 20th & 21st.
The championships have quickly changed and the series heads to Adams Kart Track for the first mini gp race to be held there in 4 years. The last mini gp race held there was SCminiGP's first season final race in 2003. SCminiGP managed to get the dates changed from September 6th & 7th, an original conflict with another local organization to the 20th & 21st in an effort to better support the community of So Cal riders.
